💡 FTA Benefit: Vehicles imported from the USA may qualify for preferential tariff rates under the US-Colombia Free Trade Agreement (TLC), potentially reducing duty rates. Confirm with a licensed Colombian customs broker (agente de aduana) before importing.
⚠️ Key Rules & Restrictions
📅 Age Restriction: Only vehicles manufactured within the last 12 months (1 model year) may generally be imported as a new vehicle. Used vehicle imports are highly restricted and require special authorization.
🔧 Emission Standards: Vehicles must meet Euro 5 / EPA Tier 2 emission standards. Many older US vehicles do not meet these requirements without modification.
🔄 Left-Hand Drive Only: Right-hand drive vehicles are not permitted on Colombian roads.
📋 Required Documents: Commercial invoice, bill of lading, technical certificate, DIAN import declaration (formulario 500), and customs agent authorization.
🏦 Nationalization Bond: DIAN may require a performance bond during the import process. A licensed agente de aduana is strongly recommended to navigate this process.
💡 Is It Worth Importing Your Car?
For most expats, the honest answer is no — importing a car to Colombia is expensive, bureaucratically complex, and often not financially rational. Consider:
Total import costs typically add 60–80% to the FOB vehicle value
New cars are readily available in Colombia at competitive prices
Medellín's Metro system and ride apps (Cabify, InDriver) are excellent and very affordable
If you need a vehicle, buying locally is almost always cheaper than importing
Exception: rare/classic vehicles, specialized vehicles not available in Colombia, or if you have a very high-value vehicle you're attached to
